Iron Dextran

Prescriber Highlights

• Injectable hematinic. Used with epoetin (EPO) in small animals.

• Contraindications: Do not give IV or SC. Known hypersensitivity to iron dextran; presence of any anemia other than iron deficiency anemia; acute renal infections, in conjunction with oral iron supplements.

• Adverse Effects: Pain with IM injection. Prostration & muscular weakness, anaphylactoid reactions.

• High dosages may cause increased incidences of teratogenicity & embryotoxicity.
